For whatever reason, there may be a time that you find yourself needing to drive a stick shift automobile. Weather it's because you're car is broken down, or just to save face, its a handy thing to know.
1. This step assumes that you've sat down in the car and put your seat-belt on. Now push the clutch all the way to the floor and start the car.
2. If you usually drive an automatic shift car, you're probably not used to using the parking brake. In a manual shift car, the parking break is a must. Put your foot on the floor break and then release the parking break.
3. Assuming you're starting off not parked in a garage, we'll assume that you're starting out going forward. Using your left foot, with your right foot still on the brake, push the clutch pedal all the way down to the floor.
4. With the clutch pedal all the way to the floor, put the stick shift into first gear.
5. WITHOUT TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR, take your foot off of the break, and SLOWLY let off of the clutch pedal until you can feel the sweet spot and the car starts to move. If the engine starts to die, push back on the clutch a little and then very slowly let off while the car starts to get to speed and you can let the clutch all of the way out. THE HARD PART IS DONE NOW!
6. Push the accelerator to speed up a bit, until you get to 3,000 to 5,000 rpms.
7. Push the clutch all the way back in (without pushing the brake) and switch the stick shift to second gear.
8. Let off of the clutch again. You don't have to be as delicate when you let off like you did in first gear. Let all the way off the clutch and accelerate again.
9. Repeat steps 5, 6, and 7 again until you're in your high gear.
10. When it's time to slow down and park, slow down with the car in neutral. When you've come to a stop, push the clutch all the way in and put the car in first gear and the apply the parking break.
12. Turn the car off and release the clutch.
You're done!
